Allergy medicine

Allergy, or type I hypersensitivity, is the systemic inflammatory response of the body toward allergens or allergy causing agents. People with allergy are usually hypersensitive toward certain things which are considered normal by other people. Some of these things include dust, pollen, certain foods, and even mosquito bites. The patients may offer suffer from small problems like running nose, itchy nose, rash, and other things. However, sometimes allergy could be really dangerous and potentially life-threatening with symptoms like anaphylactic shock, which could be fatal. Generally, allergy can be found out with certain symptoms and can be treated early with allergy medicine. When found out earlier, the chances of controlling allergy with allergy medicine are more and easier. However, it is to be noted that allergy can only be controlled, and not cured. The most practical remedy for allergy is to lead a clean lifestyle, stay away from the allergens which cause you allergy, take allergy medicine, and follow the instructions of the physician.

Some of the commonest symptoms are running nose, itchy nose, wheezing, ear pain, headache, and in some cases even asthma. While most of the people ignore these problems as not-so-important ones, you have to take notice if they tend to occur again and again in a relatively short period of time. If you feel or suspect that after consuming certain food or after using something you tend to have these symptoms, you should consult your physician immediately. For treating allergy, there are both prescription and over-the-counter allergy medicine available. Usually, physicians will suggest antihistamines to control allergy, as they are considered the best in controlling the symptoms. An antihistamine is also the most versatile of the allergy medicine, as it can be taken as a pill, nasal spray, liquid, or an eye drop. Benadryl, Claritin, and Dimetane are some of the famous over-the-counter medicines while Clarinex, Allegra, and Zyrtec are the most famous prescription medicines.

When exposed to an allergy causing agent, the patient is likely to get his immune system triggered on. The immune system immediately releases histamine, which gets attached to the receptors in blood vessels and makes them larger. This causes problems and results in redness, itch, running nose, and other problems. The proper allergy medicine for this problem is an antihistamine. By giving antihistamines, the histamine receptors are blocked and the symptoms can be prevented. Antihistamines usually cause drowsiness, but non-sedating antihistamines can also be suggested by your physician.

Another important category of allergy medicine is the decongestant. Decongestants, as the name suggests, relieve congestion and usually go hand in hand with antihistamines. As congestion is one of the commonest symptoms of allergy, decongestants are widely used by allergy patients. They are available in the form of both liquid and pills, and are extensively used as nasal sprays and eye drops. Like antihistamines, decongestants are also available as prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Sudafed tablets, Afrin nasal sprays, and Visine eye drops are some of the over-the-counter drugs and Claritin-D, Allegra-D, and Zytec-D are some of the common prescription drugs. Corticosteroids, another commonly prescribed form of allergy medicine, are used to treat the inflammation related to allergies. They can be taken as nasal corticosteroids, inhaled corticosteroids, eye drops, and oral steroids.

Generic medicine offer better alternatives

Everyone is complaining about the cost of living – but it is ironic that the cost of staying alive is so much more expensive.

It is a recognized fact that medicines are very expensive. It may even be a bit infuriating to realize that the price for medicines (whether to maintain good health or to cure certain diseases) is quite high that it would sometimes border on the prohibitive and that the more important the beneficial effect of the said medicine there is a direct correlation as to how expensive it will be. To further compound this issue is the fact that most HMOs do not have enough subsidies that would cover the cost of buying medicine. You can almost feel like you are being backed into a corner.

It is a good thing then that we are now given certain options that would allow us to buy medicines at a cheaper cost. This more affordable medical option is by buying generic medicine. Generic medicine is actually the same as branded medicine in that it also contains the same active ingredients in the same level of formulation. It also has the same effect on the body as branded medicine. The only difference is the price as they are cheaper compared to the price of branded medicine or the originator medicine.

There is a growing demand for generic medicine all over the world because of the prohibitive prices of most branded or originator medicines. From a cost point of view, it really does make more sense. If a generic drug has the same formulation containing the same active ingredient and has the same beneficial effects on the body then why buy the more expensive the kind when you get to save on buying generics? This is what is driving people to prefer generic medicine.

Generics also play a big part in other types of drugs like Viagra. The anti-impotency drug is quite expensive and for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, the promise of generic equivalents to Viagra is a godsend. Generic Viagra is now on the market and it has benefitted many men who suffer from the disease but who do not have the deep pockets or the kind of HMO coverage that would allow them to buy branded Viagra. The same can be said with the emergence of generic Cialis, a more potent anti erectile dysfunction medicine. Generic Viagra and Generic Cialis has been a great boon to many men all over the world who suffer from a disease that most of them would rather not talk about or discuss in public. With generic anti erectile dysfunction medicine, they can now lead better lives without worrying about its cost.

The fast growing demand for various generic medicines has actually resulted in the emergence of so called generic pharmacies. These are pharmacies that specialize in distribution and sale of the generic versions of branded medicines. In fact, generic pharmacies have even begun going up on the internet because of its highly accessible and 24 / 7 presence. With online generic pharmacies, any person who needs to fill up their prescription for generic Viagra or generic Cialis can just visit online to get their medicine. The anonymity of transacting online is also a big plus, especially for men who are still a bit ashamed about having erectile dysfunction.

What Are Sports Medicine Doctors and How Can They Treat Sports Related Injuries

Sports medicine is the practice of diagnosing, healing and rehabilitating patients from injuries or illnesses that occur through their participation in sports or athletic activities. Young athletes of all ages, weekend warriors and seniors who wish to keep fit can all benefit at times from sports medical services.

Treatment for sports injuries can involve certified athletic trainers, primary care physicians and osteopaths, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and exercise physiologists. They treat sports related injuries of the neck, back and spine, hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, and hand. Though many might call themselves a “sports medicine” specialist, this category is not recognized as such by the medical community in the U.S. So sports medicine doctors begin achieving such recognition by initially completing medical training, residency and certification in another area of study: most often in the fields of Orthopedics or Osteopathy.

Once they have received their respective degrees and complete their residency, they enroll in a one to two year sports medicine fellowship program. Osteopathic sports medicine doctors are more likely to be non-surgical or primary care givers. Orthopedic surgeons typically focus on surgical patient care.

Accreditation is mandatory before representing themselves as a sports medicine specialist. The organizations that certify these physicians are the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for medical doctors; and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists for Osteopaths.

Surgical fellows concentrate their studies on surgical techniques for sports injuries. Non-surgical fellows focus on diagnostics, non-surgical treatments, and rehabilitation. There is some overlap as both categories of these sports medicine doctors must gain perspective on the issues and treatments used by the other. And both groups of fellows learn how to apply their new specialty to their original one (such as pediatrics, neurology, internal medicine, etc).

The healthcare community and the public view D.O.’s (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) and M.D.’s (Medical Doctors) similarly. But the manner in which they treat patients can be different. Unlike M.D.’s Osteopaths, perform hands-on manipulation to injuries, not unlike a physical therapist or exercise physiologist. However, they are not limited to this course of treatment. Osteopaths also perform traditional medical treatments, surgery, and can prescribe drugs. But the AMA only recognizes D.O.’s and M.D.’s as licensed sports medicine doctors.

Commonly – especially for weekend warriors and seniors – family doctors are often the entry for treatment to a minor sports injury. But if further treatment is needed for wounds or other serious injury, your family doctor calls in a specialist; be it a primary care sports medicine doctor for an acute injury, or a physical therapist if your primary care physician diagnoses nothing more than a severely pulled muscle. It should be noted that since sports medicine is not a specialty, and with more and more Americans remaining active longer, many primary care physicians keep abreast of advancements in this field.

If you wish to find a primary care sports medicine doctor in your area, contact your local, state, or the national office of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine.

Review-Medicine Show

Medicine Show, Heidi Lampietti (ed.), 2006, ISBN 1892619091

This is a collaborative novel (each chapter written by a different person) about a medicine show traveling around Europe in the immediate aftermath of World War I.

Professor Bernhard Freedomhowler’s Internationally Acclaimed Traveling Exhibition of Medicinal Wonderment consists of a very disparate group of individuals. Calliope is a boy with smooth skin, a snout-like nose and a tail, who can whistle from his mouth, his nose and even his ears. Norris is part-human and part-dog, who is brought on stage as a snarling, ravenous beast ready to tear out someone’s throat. After he is given a dose of Freedomhowler’s Pan-Herbal Restorative Elixir, he immediately turns into a calm, erudite person quoting Shakespeare.

Lady Bodicaea (real name: Heather McInnerney) is Scottish, and the show’s strongwoman. Grenadine is an English nurse who is the show’s medium/fortune teller. The leader of the group is Bernhard Freedomhowler (his real name is Tarbottom), an American from Kentucky. He learned the business as part of Wild Bill Hickok’s Perambulatory of Astonishing Wonders. Wild Bill has become a figment of Freedomhowler’s imagination, and constantly talks to him.

The group spends much of its time just trying to make enough money to eat and to make it to the next town or village. There is the always-present need to make a quick exit should the local townspeople decide that the group has worn out its welcome. Freedomhowler also tries to stay away from Drake, part of the American forces, who orders him to give up the medicine show and return to America (Freedomhowler is an ex-spy).

With any collaborative novel like this, some chapters will be better than others. It’s a good story, and for those interested in the history of World War I, this book is worth checking out.
