Chinese Tibetan Medicine In Tibetan medicine, the common cold is a commonly encountered disorder caused by abnormal seasonal factors, aggravated by filthy pathogens plus overstrains, anger, fright, a dirty or immoderate diet. The external pathogen enters the body through the two vessels besides the nostril.
Symptoms of common cold include sneezing, running nose, sore throat,coughing and abnormal badkan, mkhris pa, and rlung due to pathogenic invasion.The manifestations may also vary due to the different sites affected. When the nose is affected, it is called a nasal common cold, manifesting running nose, withburning pain, and sour-itching; when the throat is affected, it is called a throat common cold, manifested by symptoms in the pharynx, upper palate and nasal cavity, such as running nose, sore throat with burning sensation, and sneezing at the later stage; when the lung is affected, the manifestations include frequent coughing, pain in the head, back and chest, spitting of purulent mucus, and hoarseness. There is also a kind of epidemic common cold, which is a rather serious condition, manifested by general lassitude, general sour pain in the jointslike being beaten, severe chills, bitter taste, loss of appetite, and restless sleep. this case is not well treated, or is complicated by over-exertion (vigorous physical labor, excessive sexual activities), a severe condition may result.
For its treatment, a general recipe can be administered including Caulis Tinospora, Fructus Terminalia chebula, Fructus Terminalia bellirica, Fructus Phyllanthi, Herba Swertia purpurascens, Radix Inula, Rhizoma Acrorrhiza, Take the decoction warm to promote sweating, Jiu-wei-qing-peng Powder may also be administered (Radix Aconiti tangutica, Fructus Terminalia chebula, Radix Inula, Benzoin, Herba Pterocephali, Radix Rodiola crenulate, Rhizoma Acrorrhiza, Herba Pagaeophyton, Herba Oxytropis).
For a nasal common cold, vaporization to the nose can be applied with the juice from a radish; a throat common cold can be treated with Liu-wei-ding-xiang Powder (Flos Eugenia, Calciosinter, Radix Glycyrrhiza, flower from Gentiana, Radix Vladimiria, Fructus Terminalia chebula, with sugar added).
